SSE plc has greenlit a €300 million investment in the 170 MW Platin Power Station in County Meath—designed to deliver rapid-response backup power and bolster grid resilience as Ireland scales up renewables. Backed by a 10-year Capacity Market contract worth €250 million, the project reflects a pragmatic approach to balancing sustainability and energy security.

Set to run on both natural gas and Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), the station is also hydrogen-ready—positioning it for long-term adaptability in a volatile energy market. With construction starting in autumn and completion due in 2028, this is a strategic pivot toward flexible, low-carbon generation that aligns with Ireland’s evolving energy mix.
