Gas gains traction in freight transition
Ireland’s push for cleaner commercial transport took a major step forward with the opening of Panda’s new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) station in Dublin. Built with Gas Networks Ireland, it’s the 12th CNG station in the country—signalling clear momentum in the shift from diesel to gas-powered HGVs.
CNG and renewable BioCNG are emerging as critical low-emission solutions for the freight sector, where electrification remains limited. With HGV gas usage up over 90% in a year and more than 170 gas-powered trucks already on Irish roads, the infrastructure—and appetite—for change is growing fast.
Panda’s fleet plans underscore this trend, with 32 CNG trucks on the road and 24 more due by 2026. Meanwhile, the Government-backed GRAZE grant scheme is injecting €750,000 to help businesses transition, covering up to €10,000 per HGV.
Heavy goods vehicles make up just 3% of traffic but contribute 20% of transport-related emissions. For energy and logistics leaders, this presents both a challenge and a strategic opportunity to drive real emissions cuts.
