Spain and China convened the inaugural Spain-China Forum on Green Energy in Madrid, bringing together around 300 representatives from government departments, industry associations, and leading energy companies to explore deeper collaboration on the global green transition. The forum focused on practical cooperation opportunities in renewable energy, clean technologies, and sustainable finance.

Spanish Minister of Industry and Tourism Jordi Hereu highlighted the country’s rapid growth in installed renewable capacity over the past two decades, positioning clean energy as a central pillar of Spain’s energy mix. He emphasised the forum’s role in fostering new avenues for cooperation, building consensus, and enabling companies to capitalise on emerging development opportunities.

China’s position as a strategic partner in zero-carbon industries was underscored by Jaime Peris, special representative of Spain’s Ministry of Industry and Tourism. He stressed the importance of pragmatic collaboration to fully leverage complementary strengths at a critical stage of the global energy transition.

The forum showcased the synergy between Spain and China in the renewable sector. Spain has long been a pioneer in photovoltaic technology within Europe, while China’s sustained investment and large-scale solar deployment have made it the most competitive solar market worldwide, according to Jose Donoso, director general of the Spanish Photovoltaic Union (UNEF).

Delegates participated in roundtable discussions covering key topics such as grid security, AI-driven energy systems, green finance solutions, and investment opportunities, sharing insights and exploring practical collaboration. The forum reflected both nations’ commitment to enhancing energy security, accelerating decarbonisation, and supporting innovation across clean energy sectors.
