South Korean steel and materials conglomerate POSCO Group has launched a companywide energy conservation initiative across 19 domestic affiliates, responding to broader strains on South Korea's energy supply. The programme, called the S.A.V.E. Challenge, began on 30 March 2026 and aligns with government-led energy conservation policies aimed at reducing national consumption.

The Korea Times reported that the campaign centres on four employee actions: using stairs instead of elevators, taking public transport or walking during commutes, carpooling, and switching off unused devices. Participation is tracked through POSCO Group's in-house mobile platform, the Challenge app, developed in 2022 to support the company's environmental, social and governance initiatives.

Registration opened for one week from 30 March, with full participation beginning 6 April. POSCO Group said it plans to continue the initiative until the energy situation stabilises, and is offering incentives based on verified employee participation to drive engagement.

The campaign is intended as both a short-term response to the current energy crunch and a reinforcement of the company's long-standing conservation culture. POSCO Group has maintained energy-saving measures since 2008, including a five-day vehicle rotation system, indoor temperature management, and lights-off protocols during lunch breaks and after working hours.

South Korea has faced persistent energy supply pressure in recent years, driven by high industrial demand, ageing infrastructure, and the phased restructuring of its power generation mix. The country consumed approximately 553 TWh of electricity in 2024, according to the International Energy Agency, with industry accounting for the largest share of demand.

POSCO Group is one of South Korea's largest industrial conglomerates, with operations spanning steel, chemicals, energy, and materials across domestic and international markets.
