Ireland targets €14bn grid upgrade for greener future
Ireland’s energy regulator is eyeing a €14 billion overhaul of the national grid between 2026 and 2030 to fast-track renewables and electrification. The draft plan by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities aims to connect 4.4GW of new renewable capacity, support 1 million EVs, roll out 680,000 heat pumps, and unlock up to 5GW of offshore wind.
Key priorities include major technology upgrades, new circuits, expanded substations, and enhanced storm resilience. EirGrid will also take ownership of offshore transmission assets and gear up for the Celtic interconnector with France to boost security and independence.
Consultation is now open, with final decisions due later this year.
