Ireland switches off coal for good
Ireland has officially ended coal-fired electricity generation as ESB’s Moneypoint station, once a key national supplier, transitions to oil-only use until its full shutdown in 2029. This move marks a defining moment in the country’s clean energy strategy, and a signal to industry leaders watching for shifts in grid stability, supply security, and investment priorities.
For now, Moneypoint will serve as a backup facility under emergency instruction, but its long-term future lies in renewables. Backed by ESB’s multi-billion euro Green Atlantic plan, the site is set to become a major renewable energy hub. The phase-out aligns Ireland with a growing list of European countries abandoning coal, while also highlighting ongoing dependence on gas, imports, and infrastructure upgrades to keep the lights on.
This moment raises bigger questions for business energy leaders: Is your operation futureproofed for a fossil-free grid?
