Algerian Minister of State for Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, held high-level talks with International Energy Forum (IEF) Secretary-General Jassim Al-Shirawi in Riyadh to examine developments in global oil and gas markets and address challenges related to energy security and the energy transition. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 21st UNIDO General Conference, with senior officials from both Algeria and the IEF in attendance.

The discussions focused on strengthening Algeria’s cooperation with the IEF, expanding consultations, and coordinating positions to support market stability and encourage long-term investment in the hydrocarbons sector. Arkab highlighted Algeria’s commitment to multilateral dialogue, underscoring the IEF’s role as a key platform for producing and consuming nations, which collectively account for more than 90% of global oil output.

A major theme was aligning energy security with development needs during the transition to cleaner energy sources. Arkab emphasised partnerships in training, knowledge exchange, and capacity building, while exploring the use of modern technologies to achieve a balanced energy mix.

Al-Shirawi commended Algeria’s active engagement in the IEF, noting the 2016 Algiers Ministerial Meeting that led to the Algiers Agreement and laid the groundwork for the OPEC and non-OPEC Declaration of Cooperation. He stressed the importance of sustainable, long-term investment in hydrocarbons alongside renewable energy and clean technologies to meet rising global demand.

The meeting concluded with Arkab extending an invitation for the IEF Secretary-General to visit Algeria, reinforcing bilateral ties and further cooperation on global energy challenges. Both parties committed to continued collaboration to enhance international market stability and advance strategic energy partnerships.
